Trial run of tri-nation bus service starts

A four-day trial run of tri-nation bus service on Dhaka-Shiliguri-Kathmandu route started on Monday morning from Dhaka to enhance people-to-people contact in Bangladesh, India and Nepal. Distance and travelling time would be reduced and new aspects for tourism would be introduced after introducing regular service on the proposed Dhaka-Kathmandu route, Roads, Transport and Highways Division officials said. The trial run started with two Shyamoli NR Travels buses from BRTC’s Kamalapur International Bus Terminal at Motijheel. The buses are scheduled to reach Kathmandu on April 26 via Gabtoli-Nabinagar-Chandra-Elenga-Hatikumrul-Bogra-Rangpur-Panchagarh-Banglabandha (Bangladesh)-Phulbari-Shiliguri-Panitanki (West Bengal, India)-Kankarvita-Kathmandu (Nepal) route. The distance of the new route is around 1,100 kilometres, RTHD officials said. RTHD secretary Md Nazrul Islam inaugurated the trail run at the Motihjeel terminal at 8:30am. 45 tri-nation delegates and seven bus crews are scheduled to join the trial run. Representatives of the three countries and Asian Development Bank left the terminal around 9:00am, said RTHD joint secretary Chandan Kumar Dey who was also in the delegation. After the trial run they would submit a report and a protocol would be signed to start the service, he said. From Bangladesh, 25 officials joined the run headed by BRTC chairman Md Farid Ahmed Bhuiyan. On Monday the buses were scheduled to reach Rangpur, on April 24 Shiliguri and on April 25 Bharatpur. The initiative was taken under Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal initiative’s sub-regional motor vehicle agreement, according to the division.
