Bangladesh moves 8 notches up in EIU Democracy Index-2019

Bangladesh has moved eight notches up in the Economist Intelligence Unit's (EIU) Democracy Index-2019 with an overall score of 5.88. Bangladesh ranks 80th on the index, compared to the 88th position with a score of 5.43 last year. The country’s score on the Democracy Index 2017 fell to its lowest in a decade. Earlier, the country ranked 84th with a score of 5.73 in 2016, according to the EIU of The Economist Group, a sister concern to The Economist magazine, UK. The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has released the Democracy Index which ranks 167 countries by 60 indicators across five broad categories. The categories considered for the index are electoral process and pluralism, the functioning of government, political participation, democratic political culture and civil liberties. The index classifies each country either as a full democracy, flawed democracy, hybrid regime or authoritarian.
