‘Bulbul’ causes onion price hike; Action against 2,500

Commerce Secretary Jafar Uddin has said cyclonic storm Bulbul left an impact on country’s onion market that caused the price hike of the essential cooking item.

He also said that legal action has been taken against at least 2,500 dishonest traders.

The Commerce secretary came up with the information at a press briefing at the conference room of his ministry on Monday.

He read out a written statement in the briefing.

“Onion import from India at a nominal price rose by three times while from Myanmar by four times. Besides, onions are being imported by some other countries including Egypt, Turkey and China,” said Jafar Uddin.
