Six more victims of the Narayanganj mosque air conditioner explosions following the gas pipeline leakage have died while undergoing treatment, taking the death toll from the incident to 24. The six victims succumbed to their burn injuries at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in the capital from Saturday night to Sunday morning, said its resident medical officer Dr Partha Shankar Paul. Besides, the condition of the rest 13 burn victims who were undergoing treatment at the institute was also stated to be critical. Nineteen of the deceased were identified as Imam Abdul Malek, 60, Muazzin Delwar Hossain, 48, photojournalist Nadim Hossain, 45, Jewel, 7, Humayun Kabir, 70, Jamal, 40, Sabbir, 28, Jobayer, 18, Quddus Bepari, 70, Ibrahim, 42, Mostafa Kamal, 34, Rifat, 18, Junayed, 28, Russel, 30, Joynal Abedin, 40, Mainuddin, 12, Kanchan Hawlader, 40, Nayon, 27, Bahar Uddin, 55. Most of the injured suffered burns on over 50 percent of their bodies and all got their respiratory tracts burned, said physicians. Their bodies swelled and they are unable to take food. Police and witnesses said the incident took place around 8:45pm during Esha prayers at Baitus Salam Mosque of Paschim Talla on Friday when the devotees just finished their prayers. An electric transformer near the mosque exploded with a big bang. Soon, six air conditioners of the mosque went off and sparked a fire inside the mosque. The explosion took place due to the leakage in the gas pipeline. Around 40 devotees suffered burn injuries in the incident. They were first taken to Sadar Hospital from where 37 were sent to the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery. Meanwhile, the Fire Service and Civil Defence, the district administration and Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Ltd formed separate investigation committees to look into the incident.
