The chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda on Thursday said elections to five city corporations will be held in July this year before the 11th parliamentary elections. ‘Elections to Gazipur, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal and Sylhet city corporations would be held before the parliamentary elections. The election schedule is yet to be finalised but primarily I think the elections would be held by Julay,’ Nurul Huda told journalists after visiting the upazila election office at Paba of Rajshahi. The five-year tenure of Gazipur City Corporation will expire on September 4 while that of Sylhet on September 8, Khulna on September 25, Rajshahi on October 5 and Barisal on October 23. The CEC said the parliamentary election will be held between December 20, 2018 and January 20, 2019 but the Election Commission right now taking preparations for five city corporation polls. He also said Electronic Voting Machines would be used in the city corporation polls but it yet to be finalised how much those would be used.
