Probe into Hotel Olio ‘militant’ incident at final stage: DMP boss

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Mia on Tuesday said the investigation in the case filed over ‘militant attack’ at Hotel Olio International in Panthapath in 2017, is in the final stage. ‘A total of 14 militants have been arrested in connection with the case and of them, ten gave confessional statements. The purpose of the militants was to draw attention internationally through carrying out sabotage activities at Dhanmondi Road 32 but police foiled their plan,’ he said while speaking at a press conference, held at historic Dhanmondi Road 32 in the city, reports the UNB. On August 15 in 2017, police conducted an anti-militant drive codenamed ‘August Bite’ at the hotel and prevented a possible attack on those marching towards Dhanmondi Road No 32, marking the Mourning Day. A case was filed in that connection on the following day. Talking about the security, the DMP Commissioner said ‘There is no specific threat but we can’t shrug it off and the law enforcing agencies are alert to tackle such situation.’ The law enforcers have been conducting a combing operation in the city for the last one week and conducted block raid in Bashundhara, Gulshan and Dhanmondi areas of the city to arrest culprits, he said. Law enforcers have taken highest security measures in and around the Dhanmondi Road 32. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and President Abdul Hamid are scheduled to pay homage at the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi Road-32 around 6:30 am on Wednesday. The DMP also banned carrying of bags, sticks and inflammable things. It also urged the people to refrain from spending time by taking selfie.
