A suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Sonagazi upazila of Feni early Wednesday. The deceased was identified as Iqbal Hossain, 35, a resident of Chharaitkandi village in the upazila. He was accused in 37 cases filed with different Police Stations. Iqbal was an inter-district robber leader, police said. On secret information that a gang of robbers was taking preparation to commit robbery in Chharaitkandi village, a joined team from Sonagazi Model Police Station and Feni Detective Branch (DB) Police conducted a drive around 3:15am. Sensing the presence of the team in front of Azam Khan Market adjacent to Pathan Bari of the village, the gang opened fire on them, forcing the police personnel to fire back. Later, the police rescued bullet-hit Iqbal from the spot and took him to Sonagazi Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared him dead. The body was sent to Feni General Hospital morgue. Feni DB officer in-charge (OC) Ranjit Barua and Sonagazi Model Police Station OC Main Uddin confirmed the matter.
