Mentioning that the August 15 massacre and the August 21 grenade attack are intermingled, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has said those who rewarded killers are equally criminals. “Bangabandhu was the target of one while Sheikh Hasina the other,” he said after paying homage to Awami League women affairs secretary and late President Zillur Rahman’s wife Ivy Rahman marking her 16th death anniversary on Monday. Quader, also road transport and bridges minister, said Hawa Bhaban was the mastermind of the August 21 grisly attack. He also said BNP did not hold the trial of the killing of Ziaur Rahman although they assumed power for several times. “It’s Awami League which denounced the killing at that time.” On August 21 in 2004, a attack was carried out on the anti-terrorism rally of Awami League on Bangabandhu Avenue when the BNP-Jamaat alliance was in power. The then opposition leader and current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was the main target of the attack. At least 24 leaders and activists, including Ivy Rahman, were killed and 300 others injured in the attack. Ivy Rahman succumbed to her injuries four days later on August 24. Sheikh Hasina narrowly escaped the attack but her hearing was badly damaged.
