Train derails at Tongi, five die falling off roof

At least five passengers died falling off a train roof after it was derailed at Tongi in Gazipur on Sunday. The details about the deceased could not be known immediately. Government Railway Police at Kamalapur said that a Dhaka-bound commuter train from Jamalpur derailed in the area, leaving at least four of its passengers, who were travelling on its roof, dead on the spot. Among the injured one Shahadat Hossain died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said Bacchu Miah, sub-inspector of DMCH police outpost. Six of the injured in the train accident are brought to DMCH and remaining five are out of danger, Bacchu said referring to physicians. The accident also snapped train communication of Dhaka with others parts of the country. Meanwhile, railways minister Mujibul Haque visited the spot. ‘I have heard that four people were killed falling from train roof after being panicked following the derailment of a bogy of the train,’ the minister told reporters at his secretariat office just after the accident. The Bangladesh Railway has formed a three-member probe body to investigate into the accident. Bangladesh Railway director general Amzad Hossain said the probe committee, headed by Chandan Kanti Dey, Chief Signal Telecom of Bangladesh Railway, will submit their report within three days. The other members of the committee are Ariful Islam, (East) chief engineer, Mizanur Rahman, chief technical engineer.
