Two ‘drug traders’ killed in Satkhira ‘gunfight’

Two suspected drug traders were killed in a reported gunfight with police at Banshdaha in Sadar upazila early Sunday. The deceased are Delwar Hossain, 45, son of Abdul Goni of the village and Abul Kalam Azad, son of Abul Kashem of Keragacchi village in Kalaroa upazila. Maruf Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said police arrested Delwar and Kalam along with some hemp and Phensidyl syrups from Banshdaha Bazar on Saturday and after interrogation, they came to know that a huge consignment of drugs would be entering into the country in the night. Later, a team of police conducted a drive in Koyer Beel around 2 am, said the OC. Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the criminals opened fire on them forcing them to fire back in self-defence. After a brief gunfight, police recovered the bodies of Delwar and Kalam along with one shutter gun, one bullet and some drugs from the spot. Five policemen were also injured in the incident, said the OC. Both of them were wanted in several cases and both of them were the members of inter-district drug trading racket, said police. With the latest deaths, at least 137 people were killed in ‘gunfights’ with members of law enforcement agencies while 37 bodies of suspected drug traders were recovered after reported gun battles between rival groups during the countrywide anti-narcotic drives since 15 May.
