Vaccination to begin at five city hospitals Jan 28: DSCC

A dry run of Covid-19 vaccination will begin at five hospitals in the capital on January 28, said Chief Health Officer of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Brig Gen Dr M Sharif Ahmed on Monday. He made the disclosure at a training workshop at the Nagar Bhaban on the occasion. A total of 85 doctors and nurses of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Mugda General Hospital joined the workshop on the Covid-19 vaccination. Apart from these three hospitals, the vaccination will also begin at Kurmitola General Hospital and Kuwait Bangladesh Maitree Govt Hospital on the same day. Representatives of the World Health Organization are providing the training. The DSCC chief medical officer said this vaccine has almost no side effect. He also urged all to come forward to prevent rumours to this end. Meanwhile, a consignment of 50 lakh doses of Covid-19 vaccine, developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca, that were purchased from the Serum Institute of India arrived in the country on Monday. A flight of Air India carrying the jab landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 11am. From the airport, the doses of Covishield vaccine are supposed to be taken to the warehouse of Beximco Pharmaceuticals Ltd at Tongi from where those will be distributed across the country as per the government’s list. Bangladesh will procure 3 crore doses of the vaccine from the Indian company with 50 lakh arriving in each month. Besides, Bangladesh received 20 lakh doses of the Covishied vaccine from India on January 21 as a gift. The nationwide vaccination programme is set to begin on February 8. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the vaccination drive on January 27. In the first phase, 1.6 crore people will be vaccinated against the deadly virus.
