WB to cooperate with Bangladesh, Qimiao Fan tells PM

The World Bank will continue to cooperate Bangladesh for its economic development, outgoing World Bank Country Director for Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan Qimiao Fan today said. The assurance came when Qimiao Fan paid a farewell call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her Jatiya Sangsad office here this evening. After the meeting, PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters. The World Bank country director highly praised Bangladesh’s tremendous socioeconomic development in the last one decade under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He also mentioned Bangladesh’s remarkable progress in human development index. “Despite being a densely populated country, Bangladesh made tremendous socioeconomic progress,” he said. Qimiao Fan lauded Bangladesh’s success in poverty alleviation. The press secretary said Rohingya issue also came up for discussion. The prime minister said her government is trying its best to develop the country. “This uplift was seriously neglected by the military rulers after 1975,” she said. Sheikh Hasina said Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had dreamt of establishing a hunger and poverty-free Bangladesh. “Our government is working restlessly to materialise his dream and change the lot of the people by ensuring their basic needs,” she said. In this connection, the premier said her government’s commitment to the people is total. “We want to improve the living standard of the common people,” she said. Highlighting Bangladesh’s development in various sectors, Sheikh Hasina said the country attained self-sufficiency in food, while it made tremendous progress in power sector. Pointing out Bangladesh’s graduation to a developing country from the LDC group, the premier said: “Our ultimate aim is to become a developed and prosperous country.” On the development of education sector, Sheikh Hasina apprised the World Bank country director of how she motivated the mothers by giving incentives to send their children to the schools. About the private sector development, the premier said her government made open all fields in the private sector. PM’s Principal Secretary Md Nojibur Rahman was present on the occasion.
