11 more ‘drug peddlers’ killed in anti-narcotics drive

As the countrywide crackdown against drugs continues, eleven suspected drug dealers were killed in reported gunfights with law enforcers in the early hours of Tuesday. During the reported gunfights between drug dealers and police or RAB members, two alleged drug peddlers were killed in Cumilla’s Aranyapur, two in Nilphamari, and one each in Netrokona, Narayanganj, Feni’s Lemua, Brahmanbaria, Chuadanga’s Alamdanga, Chattogram’s Bayezid, claimed the law enforcers. Around 27 people, mostly suspected drug peddlers or drug addicts, were killed in reported gunfights with law enforcers across the country in the last 21 days as of Monday, said human rights body Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK). Of them, 10 were killed in ‘gun battles’ with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), eight with police and nine others with Detective Branch (BB) of police across the country during the period, according the ASK statistics. A total of 18 suspected drug traders or drug addicts were killed in ‘gunfights’ with RAB and police across the country in the only last six days alone, it said. According to the media reports, the rights watchdog said 2300 suspected drug peddlers or addicts have been arrested till May 15 during the ongoing anti-drug operation. According to the ASK statistics, at least 102 people have been subjected to gunfights /cross fires or extrajudicial killings from January to May 21 this year, indicating a very alarming rise in extrajudicial killing in the country. In Cumilla, two suspected drug traders—Peyar Ali, 24, and Sharif, 26-- were killed in a reported gunfight with a joint team of law enforcers in Aranyapur area of Sadar upazila around 12:40am. Being tipped off, a joint team of police and Detective Branch of police led by Additional Police Superintendent Tanvir Salehin Sumon conducted drive in the area. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, a gang of drug traders opened fire on them, forcing them to retaliate which sparked off the gunfight, said Abu Salam Mia, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station. After the gunfight, the team recovered the bodies and 400 bottles of Phensidyl, 50 kg hemp, a pistol with two round bullets and a jeep. Four policemen were also injured in the ‘gunfight’, police said In Chattogram, listed drug trader Shukkur Ali, in his forties, was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in Debarpara area under Bayazid Police Station around 2:30am. Assistant superintendent of Police Mimtanur Rahman of RAB-7 said that being tipped off, a team of RAB conducted a drive in the area. Sensing presence of the elite force, a gang of drug traders opened fire on the, prompting them to retaliate, triggering the gun battle, which left Shukkur, accused in 10 cases, dead on the spot. The team also recovered 10 thousand Yaba tablets, a shooter gun and huge amount of hemp from the spot. In Chuadanga, listed drug trader Kamruzzaman Sadu, in his thirties, of Hardi village in Alamdanga upazila, was killed in a reported gunfight with police near Alamdanga Police Station around 1:30am. Abu Zihad Fakhrul Alam Khan, officer-in-charge of Alamdanga Police station, said that being informed that a gang of drug traders were staying in the area, a police team conducted a drive in the area. Sensing the presence of police, the gang opened fire on them, prompting them to retaliate, triggering the gun battle. After half an hour of the ‘gunfight’, the law enforcers recovered the bullet-hit body of Sadu, accused in 12 cases, from the spot along with a pistol, three round bullets and a sack of Phensidyl. Meanwhile, four policemen were also injured during the ‘gun battle’, police said. In Feni, listed drug trader Mohammad Manzurul Alam Manju, in his late forties, was killed in a reported gunfight with members of RAB in Lemua area of sadar upazila early in the morning. Squadron Leader Safayet Zamil Fahim of RAB-7 said the gunfight took place when they conducted drive in the area based on secret information. After the gunfight, they recovered the body of Manju from the spot along with 10,000 pieces of Yaba tablets, a foreign pistol, seven bullets and five bullet shells, he said. Earlier, police arrested Manju in 2015 with 5 lakh Yaba tablets. Manju was accused in several cases file with different police station sin Feni and Chattogram. In Dinajpur, the notorious drug trader of the district Probal Hossain was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Bhabanipur area of Birampur upazila around 2:30am. Abdus Sabur, officer-in-charge of Birampur Police Station, said they recovered 92 bottles of phensidyl, and a revolver along with three round bullets from the sopt. Two policemen were also injured in the gunfight, he added. In Brahmanbaria, a man, Dhon Mia, in his thirties, was killed in a reported gunfight at the Bachharampur upazila in the early hours of Tuesday. RAB-10 Additional police superintendent (SP) Mohiuddin Faruqi said being tipped off a team of RAB conducted drive at Sonarumpur area of the upazila. In early hours of the day, a drug consignment reached there from Narayanganj. However, sensing the presence of law enforcers the drug dealers opened fire to RAB and RAB also fired back which triggered a reported gunfight. Dhon Mia was left dead on the spot during the gunfight. RAB members seized around 11,700 pieces Yaba, cash Tk 48,700, and a pistol from a private car during the raid. Dhon Mia was wanted in four cases. The law enforcers detained Dhon Mia’s wife Arjina Begum. The RAB official said Dhon Mia was resident of the village of Morichakandi. In Netrakona, a man was killed in a reported gunfight at Sadar upazila of Netrakona in the early hours of Tuesday. The deceased is Amzad Hossain, in his thirties. He was wanted in 15 cases including three murder cases and five narcotic charges. The Sadar Circle Additional Superintendent of police (ASP) Mohammad Faqruzzaman Jewel said police detained Amzad Hossain in West Nagra area of Netrakona municipality on Monday night. Police also recovered around 300 Yaba tablets and 500gram heroin from his residence. Later, a team of police along with Amzad went for a drive to recover arms and drugs from Barail at about 3:30am. Sensing presence of law enforcers, Amzad’s associates opened fire to them; police also fired back, at one stage of their gunfight, Amzad received a bullet. He was taken to Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The police official said sadar police officer-in-charge (OC) Borhan Uddin, Sub-inspector (SI) Moqbul Hossain, SI Mohsin, SI Abdullah, and Constable Malek were also injured during the gunfight. The OC said police also recovered a foreign-made pipegun and five cartooz from the spot.
