‘Amphan’ likely to cross Bangladesh coast between late night to tomorrow afternoon

The super cyclonic storm ‘Amphan’ over West Central Bay and adjoining area moved North-North Eastwards and it may cross Bangladesh coast between Khulna-Chattogram during late night to tomorrow afternoon or evening, said a met office bulletin issued this morning. The cyclone was centred at 9am today about 845 km South West of Chattogram port, 795km South West of Cox’s Bazar port, 730km South-South West of Mongla port and 725 km South-South West of Payra port while it is likely to move in a North-North Easterly direction, it said. Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological department in its latest storm forecasts message said the super cyclonic storm ‘Amphan’ is likely to weaken into an Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm during next 6 hours. The storm is likely to move north-northeastwards across northwest Bay of Bengal and cross West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts between West Bengal and Hatiya islands close to Sundarbans during the afternoon or evening of May 20, it said. Maximum sustained wind speed within 90 kilometres (Kms) of the cyclone Center is about 225 Kmp rising to 245 kmp in gusts or squalls, it said, adding that sea will remain very high near the super cyclone centre. Maritime ports of Mongla and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted danger signal number seven. Coastal districts of Satkhira, Khulna, Bagherhat, Jhalokathi, Pirojpur, Borguna, Patuakhali, Bhopal, Barishal, Laxmipur, Chandpur and their offshore islands and chars will come under danger signal number seven. Maritime ports of Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar have been advised to keep hoisted danger signal number six. Coastal districts of Noakhali, Feni, Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar and their offshore islands and chars will come under danger signal number six. Under the influence of the very severe cyclonic storm ‘Amphan’and the new moon phase ,the low-lying areas of the coastal districts of Satkhira, Khulna, Bagherhat, Jhalokathi, Pirojpur, Borguna, Patuakhali, Bhopal, Barishal, Laxmipur, Noakhali, Feni, Chattogram and their offshore islands and chars are likely to be inundated by storm surge of 5-19 feet height above normal astronomical tide. The coastal districts of Satkhira, Khulna, Bagherhat, Jhalokathi, Pirojpur, Borguna, Patuakhali, Bhopal, Barishal, Laxmipur, Chandpur, Noakhali, Feni, Chattogram and their offshore islands and chars are likely to experience wind speed up to 140-160kmh in gusts or squalls with heavy to very heavy falls during the passage of the storm. All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay and deep sea have been advised to take shelter immediately and will remain in shelter till further notice.
