A couple of lovers reportedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a train at Basail upazila in Tangail district early Wednesday.

The incident took place in Jorbari area under Kashil union of the upazila around 4am.

The deceased were Habil Mia, 17, son of Abul Mia, a resident of Garashin Madhyapara village under Sadar upazila; and Rita Akter, 15, daughter of Manjurul Islam, of Moishanandnal village of the same upazila.

Habil and Rita had developed a love affair while working together in a textile mill. They jumped in front of a Dhaka-bound Nilsagar Express running train in Basail Jorbari area at about 4am as their families did not accept their relation, it was learnt.

Later, being informed, police recovered their bodies from the spot, said Gharinda Railway Police ASI Fazlul Haque.
