Flood protection embankment collapses in Nageshwari, low-lying areas inundated
The water levels of all the rivers have increased and the flood protection embankment has broken due to the continuous rains and onrush water from the upstream at Nageshwari upazila in Kurigram district.
The water of the strong current entered the locality and the low-lying areas in the river basins have been inundated.
The water of Dudhkumar, Phulkumar, Brahmaputra river, Gangadhar, Shankosh rivers are rising and flowing in strong current in the upstream.
Abed Ali, a UP member of Bamandanga union in the upazila, said water of Dudhkumar started entering the locality over the flood control embankment next to his house in Teliani area from Tuesday afternoon.
It has been that the way the water enters can increase the flood. Many houses in these areas may be flooded.
The upazila nirbahi officer Farzana Jahan, executive engineer of Kurigram Water Development Board Abdullah Al Mamun, supervisor engineer Ahsan Habib visited the spot on information on Wednesday.
Mostafizur Rahman, deputy assistant engineer of Kurigram Water Development Board, said, 'We are working to prevent the permanent erosion of the river. In this situation, water is entering the locality through some low areas of the embankment. Geo bags, Geo tubes, boulders are being thrown at that place.'
Kurigram deputy commissioner Saidul Arif said, 'All preparations have been made for the flood. The district has stock of 541 metric tons of rice, Tk 10,2100 in cash and dry food. Where needed, it will be distributed immediately.'
