‘Legs of rape victim broken by UP member’ for not lifting case
A union parishad member, who is one of the accused in case filed for gang raping a woman, along with his cohorts broke the two legs of the woman for not withdrawing the case in Taltali upazila of Barguna.The incident took place at about 7.00pm at Mathkhola area of the upazila on Sunday.
According to locals, accused Chutobagi union parishad’s Ward No-7 member Enayet Piada was making unethical proposals to the victim for a long time.
On April 8, the accused along with five to six people broke into the victim’s house at night and gang raped her after tying her hands, legs and mouth.
Later, the victim lodged a case against the UP member and four others unknown people with Taltali Police Station in this regard. Accused Enayet Piada was arrested then and sent to jail following the case. He, however, released from the jail after securing bail in the case.
The UP member started to make pressure to the victim for withdrawing the case after his release from jail. He along with his cohorts started beating the victim with an iron rod on Sunday evening as she denied to withdraw the case. Two legs of the victim were broken during the attack.
Being informed, police and UNO Sifat Anwar Tumpa rushed to spot and rescued the victim. They took the victim to Taltali Hospital.
The victim was first referred to Barishal and then Dhaka for better treatment as her two legs were found broken.
About the attack, the victim said, “Member Enayet Piada and his cohorts were threatening me and my family members to withdraw the case. He (Enayet Piada) attacked me as I did not withdraw the case. Now my two legs are broken by the attack.”
The victim sought justice over the attack.
When our the Daily Observer correspondent contacted with the UP member, he said he did not know anything about it. The accused cut off the mobile phone call after this comment.
Dr Sayed Hasan Shohag of Taltali Hospital said legs of the victim were broken in the attack. She was referred to Dhaka for better treatment, he added.
Taltali Police Station OC Kazi Shakwat Hossain Topu said they sent police on the spot.
“We did not receive any complaint in this regard yet. Legal steps would be taken upon receiving the complaint,” he said.
UNO Sifat Anwar Tumpa said they rescued the victim and sent her to Dhaka for better treatment as her two legs were found broken in X-ray report.
