Reports against graft help govt take actions: PM

Describing journalists as the mirror of the society, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday said reports against corruption and social inconsistencies help the government take appropriate actions. While remotely addressing a function organised by Dhaka Reporters’ Unity marking its silver jubilee, she also urged reporters to work with patriotism and responsibility. At the beginning of her speech, the prime minister shed a light on Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s efforts to flourish independent media and his association with newspapers. She said no terrorist and corrupt element is being spared even if they belong to her party. The prime minister said there was a time when it was a normal phenomenon to suppress any sort of corruption, but the Awami League government never does that. "When any news or information comes out about any corruption or unjust activities, we never think whether our party is involved in this. Even big leaders are not being spared if they engage in corruption," she said. She urged journalists to work taking into consideration people’s welfare. Sheikh Hasina also said the relevant law has been amended so that no journalist is arrested just for harassment.
